Government Sues CBS, Blames Radio Station for September Riots
Not only is CBS still off the air after the government shut down the Buganda kingdom’s radio station last September, but the the Attorney General says it must pay the government damages for riots that killed over 25 people in eleven suburbs.
The Attorney General said the radio promotes seeds of hatred and threatened social cohesion.
Since CBS and other stations were shut down last year, some stations upcountry have refused to hold interviews with opposition candidates hoping to challenge President Museveni next year, concerned that they might get thrown off the air. Besigye and Otunnu say they have had trouble getting on the air in northern and western Uganda.
CBS employees have sued the Ugandan government for shutting off CBS and depriving them of their livelihood.
New Vision reported the story on Feb. 18th.
The case by CBS workers and counter-case by the attorney general will be revisited on April 20th, with lawyers on both sides asked to find a compromise.
