Mao and Sebaggala Seek DP Presidency: Conference Begins Despite DP Chaos
Despite months of chaos in the Democratic Party, the party began its conference on Thursday to pick candidates for the elections next year. 750 delegates were registered, with DP presidential candidate and Kampala mayor Nasser Sebaggala funding a large chunk of the sh400million conference in Mbale. New Vision reported the story on Feb. 19th.
The rival DP faction led by Professor Joseph Mukiibi skipped the conference, as did former DP president Paul Ssemogerer, who tried to bring both sides together. On Wednesday, Mukiibi’s faction announced the dismissal of the party’s president, as well as other DP leaders, and named Reina Kaffiire the acting party president.
Gulu MP Norbert Mao and Sebaggala are seeking party presidency, hoping to challenge President Museveni next year.
Last Tuesday, the Constitutional Court dismissed an attempt by some members of the DP Party to have president Ssebaana Kizito arrested, as well as the secretary general, for allegedly defying court orders to keep the party running. The activists also wanted the court to stop the conference in Mbale.
