Kabaka Tours Ruined Kasubi Tombs
The Kabaka toured the remains of the Kasubi Tombs on Wednesday, after a fire destroyed the UNESCO heritage site on Tuesday evening. Accompanied by his wife, he did not address the people gathering at the tombs to mourn, according to reporting by the Daily Monitor. Police say that efforts to extinguish the fire were blocked by a rioting crowd.
President Museveni visited the fire scene earlier in the day, but a crowd of people attempted to block the presidential envoy. Soldiers opened fire, killing two people and injuring five.
The site was established in 1882. Muteesa I was the first Kabaka to be buried in Kasubi; three other kings are also buried there.
