Dressed in black, Kanzus, and bark cloth, thousands of people have visited the destroyed Kasubi Tombs for the kingdom’s week of mourning.  BBC reported the story on March 22nd.

Some people offered to sell their possessions to rebuild the royal mausoleum, part of Uganda’s rich cultural heritage.  The vice-president recently donated sh20million for the reconstruction.

Buganda prince Edward Kimbugwe called allegations that the government plotted to destroy the tombs malicious, according to New Vision.  Kimbugwe said the probe into the fire should also investigates other fires at cultural sites, such as the palace in Nansana.

The Daily Monitor has posted a timeline of the fire, with information from the fire brigade and police. On the night of the fire, a distress call was made to the police at 8:46 p.m.  The first fire truck left for Kasubi at 8:52 p.m., but ran out of water.  A second fire truck with water arrived at the scene, but was blocked reportedly by crowds at 9:03 p.m.  The firefighters reported being attacked, and didn’t get access to the mauseoleum they say until 11:40 p.m.  The fire was not subdued until 2 a.m.
