U.S. Senate, Members of British Parliament Condemn Anti-Gay Bill

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

Two notable gestures of international opposition to the “Anti-Homosexuality Bill” occurred in recent weeks, with today’s unanimous passage of a United States Senate resolution condemning the proposed bill, and the news that over 100 British Members of Parliament signed an Early Day Motion urging the Ugandan government to drop the measure on April 6.

The Senate resolution was spearheaded by Wisconsin Senator Russell Feingold, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on African Affairs. “I am glad that so many political, religious and civic leaders in Uganda and around the world have spoken out against this hateful and dangerous bill before the Ugandan Parliament,” said Feingold in a statement. “Sadly, this legislation is just one example of actions taken around the world to restrict the rights of people just because of their gender or sexual orientation.” (The full text of the resolution can be found here.)

The British Early Day Motion urges the Ugandan government to “uphold international humanitarian law by abandoning the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, decriminalising same-sex acts between consenting adults in private, and outlawing discrimination against gay people.” It is sponsored by Labour MP Harry Cohen and Human Rights campaigner Peter Tatchell. (Click here for the complete text of the motion.)

The bill, introduced last year by MP David Bahati, includes the death penalty for gay people living with HIV (“aggravated homosexuality”) and life imprisonment for homosexuality.  The bill, if passed, could also extradite gay Ugandans living in the diaspora.

I request for your good office to come into play and help me resolve this burning issue as my daughter Samreen Muhammad Aslam Jan Muhammad Kapadia CNIC # 42301-93856506-6, r/o. Anees Manzil, Flat No.32, 3rd Floor, Near Chottani Medical Store, Moosa Lane, Karachi-75660 Sindh-Pakistan (case # 340 and 21/2009 Membership # F-12598) at Bantva Memon Jamat contact # 021-32444154 and 021-32440142 is pending in the office of Bantva Memon Jamat. Samreen is facing lot of difficulties. We are very poor. Please treat her as your own daughter who deserves your assistance. I pray the matter comes to a happy end once and for all and Allah bless you for your efforts.

While appreciating your efforts and certain programs to assist and help the poor classes of human-beings, I take this opportunity to write about my grievances and hardships being faced by me. After solemnizing the marriage of my daughter Samreen Muhammad Aslam Jan Muhammad Kapadia in the month of June, 2009, which involved huge expenses I went under the heavy burden of debt and there seems to be no way out to get rid of my financial crisis. I am a low-paid employee and my monthly income is meager with which I cannot arrange enough to feed my family. I am also facing difficulties to manage the educational expenses of my children. We pray to Almighty Allah for your good health, peace and prosperity. If possible please provide helps, zakats, donations or grants to meet my emergent utilities such as water, gas, electricity etc.

Under the above critical situation, I would appeal your goodself to come to my rescue by way of extending a reasonable financial support to me on humanitarian ground.

Kindly acknowledge receipt and awaiting your reply as soon as possible.
Thanks and with best regards and wish you every happy new years.
