Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made an official visit to Uganda on Friday to garner support for Iran’s nuclear program and strengthen ties between the two nations.  He arrived in Entebbe around 7:15 p.m., and was met by President Museveni.

Political analysts believe that Uganda, a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, could play a key role in whether Iran receives further sanctions from the United Nations. Tamale Mirundi, a spokesman for President Yoweri Museveni, told the Associated Press that Uganda has not ruled out the possibility of voting for sanctions.

Ahmadinejad was feted with a state banquet and will hold talks with Museveni at the state house tomorrow. Museveni and Ahmadinejad will also participate in a joint press conference.  According to reporting by the Daily Monitor, Museveni told Ahmadinejad that Uganda does not support the acquisition of nuclear weapons by any country, but believes every country has the right to use nuclear technology for civilian purposes.

The two leaders will probably also discuss the recently discovered oil reserves in Eastern Uganda and the possibility of a partnership between the two nations.
