Gang Rape Crisis in Uganda Continues: Suspect Living With HIV Nabbed
On Friday, we posted about the gang rape crisis that’s been escalating in Uganda. Police have urged women to stay home in the evenings, and carry pepper spray or a similar weapon if they must move during the late hours.
A suspect accused of raping five women and potentially infecting them with HIV has been remanded to Kigo Prison for the charge of aggravated rape.
The 28-year-old suspect runs a taxi service in Entebbe. A woman attempted to take a cab in Entebbe after picking up a document for printing, the Daily Monitor reported, but the driver kidnapped her and allegedly raped her in his house.
Earlier this month, Amnesty International released a report on sexual violence in Uganda. According to the document, one in four women in Uganda says their first sexual encounter was forced.
Violence against women remains prevalent throughout Ugandan society, from rural to urban life. It also affects women of diverse incomes.
