Anti-Homosexuality Bill Unconstitutional, Says Presidential Committee
A special presidential committee set up to review Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009 announced that virtually all of the bill was unconstitutional on Saturday, according to reporting by Josh Kron for the New York Times.
The bill, launched by MP David Bahati last year, included a provision of the death penalty for gay people living with HIV, and life imprisonment for those identified as gay. It also included a clause to extradite Ugandans living in the diaspora that engage in homosexuality.
The committee head, Adolf Mwesige, said he expected the Ugandan parliament to vote the bill down in full in a few weeks.
