Uganda: Most Free Elections?

President Museveni told the European Union that elections in Uganda would be the most free in the world.

Today, a European Union diplomat threatened to potentially withhold  foreign aid to Uganda if the country does not hold fair parliamentary and presidential elections, according to reporting by Nicholas Bariyo for the Dow Jones Newswires.  The European Union is Uganda’s largest donor.

Currently, criminal charges have been placed against two opposition candidates– Olara Otunnu, leader of the Uganda People’s Congress, and Kizza Besigye, president of the Forum for Democratic Change.  Otunnu has been charged with promoting sectarianism after accusing the government of supporting the war in northern Uganda, but left the country, rather than face the Criminal Investigations Departmetn (CID).  Besigye is being investigated for claims that Lake Kyoga was leased to foreign investors.

President Museveni responded to the European Union by saying that “the election in Uganda will be the most free in the world,” and said Uganda should not be lectured on democracy.
