Come to Uganda, Where You Can Retire at 50

President Museveni announced that civil servants would have to retire at 50, rather than 60, in the hopes of opening positions for younger workers, who suffer from high unemployment rates, the Guardian reported.  The life expectancy in Uganda is 49 years.  Almost 80 percent of Ugandans are under the age of 30, and youth workers’ organizations have supported the new retirement age.

President Museveni , who is 66, directed the retirement age to the Minister of Public Service in a letter last weekend, New Vision reported.  Almost 500,000 young adults join the Ugandan labor market every year, but only 70,000 find formal jobs.

Workers’ MPs have rejected the proposal, as well as the National Union of Trade Unions.  The retirements would affect 30,000 workers.  Uganda’s retirement age for the civil service was raised to 60 after independence.

Only 600,000 of Ugandans are formerly employed.  Most work in agriculture or are self-employed.  About 300,000 work in civil service.

The Ugandan government is currently struggling to pay the pensions of civil servants that have already retired.
