Happy National Pothole Day!

The BBC reports that a protest group in Kampala created the unofficial holiday to draw attention to the city’s poor road conditions.

The group’s organizers say the potholes have led to increased traffic congestion and accidents. Activists pretended to be fishmongers and fished in potholes as part of Tuesday’s protest.

“We are calling upon the powers to solve this mess,” said protest leader Godfrey Birimumaaso to the BBC. “It’s shameful, we’re in Kampala, the heart of Uganda.”

For his part, Kampala’s mayor says the city does not have the funds to address the problem. “To do one kilometre of a tarmac road requires you to have $1 million,” Mayor Nasser Ntege Ssebagala told the BBC. “That’s a big problem.”
