“I won’t quit,” says Election Chairman Badru Kiggundu
By Lakshmi Gandhi-
Badru Kiggundu, the embattled chairman of Uganda’s election commission, was defiant on Tuesday as calls for his resignation grew. Political opposition leaders say they will block next year’s elections unless a complete overhaul of the commission takes place.
“I am never a quitter and I won’t quit, if they don’t like my face, sorry, that’s God’s work, I can’t change it,” said Kiggundu, according to Reuters.
Dr. Kizza Besigye of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party said last week that his party would not participate in an election that was not “credible.” He and other members of the opposition would like President Yoweri Museveni to appoint a nonpartisan administrator to the post.
Museveni spoke out in support of Kiggundu during his state of the nation address earlier this month. “Someone says unless you get rid of Kiggundu, there will be no elections,” said Museveni during his June 3 speech. “There will be elections. No one will intimidate us.”
Meanwhile, the election commission has extended its voter registration deadline to Friday.
