Museveni Urges Ugandans to Ignore the World Cup
By Lakshmi Gandhi–
President Yoweri Museveni has some advice for the thousands of Ugandans who have been avidly following the World Cup:
Stop wasting your time.
Museveni, who is currently on a 5 day tour of eastern Uganda, said the country should focus on alleviating poverty instead. “You must know how to use your time valuably,” he said at a public appearance in Paliisa. As an alternative to watching football, Museveni urged parents to teach their children “about National Agricultural Advisory Services [NAADS] programs and farming. This will help change this country.”
The president’s championing of NAADS comes at a time when the agency is under increased scrutiny. On Sunday the Daily Monitor reported that 2 billion shillings had been recovered after being misappropriated by NAADS officials. More than 20 officials have been charged and many other workers are still under investigation.
“I have already received reports here that NAADS funds were not properly used,” Museveni said on Monday. “A goat of Shs 20,000 was said to have been purchased at Shs 100,000. NAADS officials who steal money will be held accountable.”
