Bududa, after a landslide last March. Eastern Uganda continues to suffer form landslides. James Akena, Reuters.

Early Saturday, five children in the same home were buried by a landslide in Bududa district, according to reporting by the Associated Press.  The parents survived, but the children that ranged from 3 to 13 years were killed.  The home was located in Bukibokolo sub-district, and the landslide occured after heavy rains.

Ten households were also affected, but this family was the only reporting deaths.  Last Wednesday, another landslide killed a child and injured five people.

Last March, 300 people were killed in Bududa by landslides.  Ugandans in the diaspora have been active in trying to raise funds to help victims, as well as to support ecological efforts that prevent landslides in the long-term.

Experts say the clearing of natural vegetation on mountains for crops makes the soil loose and prone to landslides, according to reporting by the Inter Press Service news agency.  The government has moved 4,000 people out of danger zones to temporary camps in Bulucheke.

The displaced were supposed to move to more permanent locations in Kayunga and Balambuli districts, but the deadline for the exercise passed last May without the victims moving, according to reporting by the Daily Monitor.
