Conservationists: Chimpanzees could be in danger
By Lakshmi Gandhi
Noted conservationist Jane Goodall says that unless preventative measures are taken, Africa’s chimpanzee population could be severely threatened by further oil exploration.
Goodall spoke at an environmental fundraiser in Kampala this weekend. She noted that there are now only about 300,000 chimps left in Africa, down from 1.5 million at the last count.
She urged environmentalists and oil companies to work together to preserve the chimpanzees natural habitats. “Instead of fighting oil companies let’s try and work with them. Reaching into the hearts of people is so important,” Ms Goodall said.
The Daily Monitor notes that Tullow Oil, one of the companies developing oil in Uganda, has pledged to plant trees in the ‘chimpanzee corridor’ to preserve their environment.
