Some of the confidential cables exposed by Wikileaks, a website that’s caused an international storm by publishing leaked documents, showed that the U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, asked American diplomats to spy on Uganda’s permanent representative Ruhakana Rugunda, whose two-year seat at the Security Council ends next month.

Uganda's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ruhakana Rugunda.

Uganda has worried the U.S. government in the past by hosting the Iranian president earlier this year, and rejecting the U.S. position on Burma, according to reporting by the Daily Monitor.

According to the leaked documents, the U.S. government asked their officials to compile information on presidents in the Great Lakes area, as well as their associates and heads of major institutions. ¬†They were interested in these leaders’ opinion of the U.S., as well as their health, background, and control over their countries.

American and Australian law enforcement agencies hope to see if they can press criminal charges against the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange.  Experts say the governments could face an uphill battle going after Assange legally, according to reporting by the Christian Science Monitor.
